Medical Office Assistant certificate

Are you interested in making an impact in the medical field, but contact care is not for you? Carl Sandburg College’s medical office assistant certificate program prepares students to perform routine clerical and organizational tasks in a medical office. Medical office assistants organize files, draft messages, schedule appointments and support other staff.

The medical office assistant certificate is designed to prepare students with the skills needed for medical office work, including electronic health records, word processing, medical terminology, customer service and communication skills.

This certificate is stackable, meaning the medical office professional AAS can be can be completed in just two additional semesters.

Many the required courses are available online or as a multiple modality. Multiple-modality courses provide students with the option to sit in a traditional classroom, attend online or attend a scheduled class using Skype or a telepresence robot.


Medical Office Professional AAS

The medical office professional AAS program prepares students to work in the medical office in four semesters. By completing the first two semesters of this degree, students earn the medical office assistant certificate. Courses in medical coding; insurance and billing; anatomy and physiology; biomedical ethics; and diversity are completed during the remaining two semesters.


Admission to the Program:  Open


First-Time Enrollees

  • Complete an application for admission and, if desired, apply for financial aid.
  • Send an official high school transcript or GED score report to the Admissions and Records Office.
  • Complete the Accuplacer placement exam.
  • Meet with an advisor/counselor to select classes and complete the registration process.
